The water that we get from our taps at home is not simply a balanced combination of hydrogen and oxygen atoms bonded together to make H2O like we have grown to believe, but is instead a mixture of many different chemicals, minerals, ions, and agents that help to keep our pipes clean and clear, our drinking water safe for consumption, and clear to our naked eyes. Water from our taps, especially if you live in a city, contains heavy metals, chlorine, iron, and other dissolved solids that can either be added to the water, or can leech into it on its path to your tap. While this water is often perfectly safe for us to consume as humans, it can often times be harmful or unhelpful for your plants development and growth cycles.

 

Reverse osmosis is the process of passing water through semipermeable membranes from an area of low concentration, to another area with a higher concentration. In other words, water passes through super fine membranes that act as filters, and in this process remove nearly all the contaminates in the water, leaving you with a much purer and cleaner water for your plants to use. The contaminates that a reverse osmosis water system removes, are often times harmful to the roots and cells of a plant that absorbs nutrients and water to be used within the plant itself.

 

Delicate varieties of plants, seeds that are germinating, or seedlings that are beginning to grow, can be negatively impacted by the contaminates in normal tap water, and by using a reverse osmosis water system to remove these particles, can encourage the plant to flourish and develop much healthier. Removing contaminates from the water can also allow you to better measure and gauge the nutrients that you apply to your plants because you do not have to worry about how the contaminates in the water will react with the elements and compounds in the fertilizer, and gives you greater control over the plants development and fertilization schedule.
